MARGAO: After nearly five months on the run, Yogeshwar Shetkar, a Lower Division Clerk (LDC) assigned to the Margao Municipal Council’s Administration Section, was taken into custody on December 5.
The Holy Spirit Church Fair was conducted in May of this year in Old Market, Margao, and Shetkar is accused of embezzling Rs 17,96,800 that was collected from stall owners.
Shetkar was suspended by the Margao Municipal Council after the case was made public in June.
The Council’s Chief Officer at the time, Gaurish Shankhwalkar, filed a formal complaint outlining the purported misappropriation.
The police claim that between May 19 and 25, Shetkar was given Rs 28,70,400 that had been collected from 299 booth owners.
Shetkar spent the money for his own purposes instead of depositing it into the Margao Municipal Council’s HDFC Bank account, as was the original plan.
On June 20, Shetkar was charged with violating Sections 408 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. Shetkar had eluded the police despite several attempts to serve him with a CrPC notice.
After monitoring, it was learned that Shetkar was using the train station to get back to his home.
He was caught around 2:12 a.m. on Thursday after a trap was set at the Konkan Railway Station’s entrance and departure gates.
After that, he was brought before Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Margao and placed in police custody for seven days.
