New Delhi: India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing the curtain down on his career in the longest format after claiming 229 wickets in 64 matches.
The 36-year-old made the announcement through an emotional video shared on social media late Friday night. While confirming his decision to step away from Test cricket, Shami also clarified that he intends to continue playing white-ball cricket.
In his retirement message, Shami described representing India in the Test format as one of the most special experiences of his life. He recalled making his debut in the traditional white jersey with the dream of contributing to the country and spoke about the wickets, challenges, injuries and comebacks that shaped his journey.
He also expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, family members and supporters for standing by him throughout his career. Shami acknowledged the contributions of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for providing him opportunities and supporting his development as a cricketer.
Shami’s last appearance in Test cricket came during the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023. Since then, injuries have significantly affected his availability for international cricket.
The fast bowler has been out of the Indian team since the 2025 Champions Trophy final. Although he returned to competitive cricket with impressive performances for Bengal, he did not find a place in the national setup.
Shami’s retirement marks the end of an important chapter in Indian fast bowling. Known for his ability to generate pace, seam movement and deliver crucial breakthroughs, he played a significant role in India’s red-ball campaigns across different conditions.
While his Test journey has ended, Shami’s decision to continue in white-ball cricket leaves the door open for further contributions to Indian cricket in the shorter formats.
