New Delhi: The Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced on Monday with the Centre preparing to introduce several significant bills while the Opposition geared up to press for detailed discussions on a range of national issues.
The 25 day session, comprising 19 sittings, is expected to witness intense debates over legislative proposals and political issues, making it one of the most closely watched sessions of the year.
Among the key proposals on the government’s agenda is a bill that seeks to make insulting the national song Vande Mataram a criminal offence. The Centre is also expected to reintroduce the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which proposes increasing the strength of the Lok Sabha to 850 seats while implementing 33 per cent reservation for women in the House. The legislation had failed to secure passage earlier this year and is now being brought back for consideration.
The Opposition is expected to demand extensive discussions on several issues, including alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, with the NEET controversy likely to dominate proceedings. Opposition parties have indicated that they will seek accountability from the government and push for debates on matters affecting students and public institutions.
The Parliament session also began amid heightened security in the national capital following the Cockroach Janta Party’s call for a “Chalo Sansad” march. The protest was organised to highlight alleged irregularities in the NEET medical entrance examination and demand the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
Delhi Police declined permission for the proposed march and imposed strict security measures across central Delhi, including prohibitory orders in sensitive areas. Authorities deployed additional police and paramilitary personnel, strengthened barricades and increased surveillance around Parliament and other key government installations to prevent any disruption during the session.
With major legislative proposals on the agenda and the Opposition preparing to raise contentious national issues, the Monsoon Session is expected to witness intense debates, political confrontation and significant parliamentary business in the coming weeks.
