PANAJI: Widespread rainfall across Goa over the past 24 hours has revived monsoon activity, offering respite after several days of sparse showers and slightly improving the State’s seasonal rainfall position. However, high humidity continued to keep conditions uncomfortable despite the rainfall.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Goa received 37.8 mm of rainfall between 8 am on July 21 and 8 am on July 22. Rainfall was reported across most parts of the State, with isolated pockets witnessing heavy showers. The IMD said the southwest monsoon remained active over Goa during the period.
The fresh rainfall has led to a marginal improvement in the State’s cumulative monsoon performance, bringing the seasonal rainfall deficit down to 36.2 per cent below the long-period average.
While the showers brought cooler conditions, humidity levels remained elevated. The maximum temperature settled at 31.7°C, which was 2.4°C above normal, while the minimum temperature was around 25°C. The high moisture content in the atmosphere caused the apparent or “feels like” temperature to remain 4°C to 5°C higher than the actual air temperature.
The weather office has issued a yellow alert for July 23, forecasting the likelihood of heavy rain at isolated places along with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph.
The IMD has also predicted generally cloudy skies and moderate rainfall over the next two days. Temperatures are expected to remain stable, with the maximum around 31°C and the minimum close to 26°C.
