MAPUSA: A Nagpuri youth cultural event organized on the premises of St. Xavier’s College and Higher Secondary School in Mapusa turned disorderly on the evening of April 20, after clashes erupted among attendees reportedly under the influence of alcohol.
The event, hosted by a Jharkhand-based group with prior approval from the college authorities, was expected to draw a crowd between 1,000 and 3,000 people. However, according to sources, the permission granted did not authorize the consumption or distribution of alcohol on the campus.
Despite this, several individuals were seen consuming alcohol during the programme. The situation spiraled into chaos when a verbal dispute among some participants escalated into a physical confrontation. Mapusa Police were called to the scene to disperse the crowd and restore calm.
The aftermath saw the college grounds littered with empty beer bottles and garbage, drawing public ire and raising concerns about the misuse of an educational institution for such activities.
Locals have voiced strong criticism, questioning the college management’s due diligence before granting permission. “If alcohol wasn’t permitted, how was it allowed on the premises? Who is accountable for this violation?” a concerned resident asked.
As of now, the college administration has not issued any official response. Meanwhile, residents are demanding a detailed inquiry and strict action against those responsible.
