New Delhi:
As the Delhi Assembly elections draw near, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal has made a significant appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, proposing a 50% concession on Delhi Metro fares for students. This move, aimed at alleviating the financial burden on students, comes as Kejriwal seeks re-election in the upcoming Delhi polls.
Kejriwal’s letter to PM Modi highlights the critical role the Delhi Metro plays in the daily commute of students to schools and colleges across the city. He emphasized that a substantial number of students rely heavily on the metro, and the current fares have become a significant financial strain. To address this, Kejriwal suggested a 50% concession on metro fares, stressing that both the Delhi and Central governments, as joint funders of the Delhi Metro, should equally share the costs of this initiative.
The AAP has long prioritized education, and this proposal is part of their broader strategy to make public transportation more accessible and affordable for students. Currently, women in Delhi enjoy free bus rides, and the AAP plans to extend this benefit to male students as well, making bus travel completely free for all students if they return to power.
Kejriwal’s proposal is not just a political gesture but a response to the real challenges faced by many poor students in Delhi who often struggle to continue their education due to the high costs of commuting. The Delhi Metro, being a 50:50 venture between the Delhi Government and the Central Government, makes it feasible for both entities to share the financial implications of the concession.
However, due to the model code of conduct in place ahead of the elections, any decision on this proposal can only be implemented after the formation of the new government. The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled for February 5, with the counting of votes set for February 8.
In his appeal, Kejriwal underscored the importance of education and the need for affordable transportation options for students. He expressed hope that PM Modi would support this initiative, which aligns with the government’s efforts to make public transport more accessible and affordable for all.
