New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said the Northeast has the potential to become a major driver of India’s economic growth by building on its strengths in organic agriculture, sustainable farming and high quality agricultural produce.
Speaking at the inauguration of the region’s largest organic spice processing facility in Lumdaitkhla, located in Ri-Bhoi District, Sitharaman stressed that changing global consumer preferences are creating significant opportunities for regions known for environmentally responsible farming practices.
She noted that agricultural success in the future will increasingly depend on quality rather than quantity, with consumers across international markets seeking premium, traceable and sustainably produced food products. According to her, this trend places states such as Meghalaya in a favourable position to benefit from rising demand for organic produce.
The Finance Minister said Meghalaya does not need to compete with larger agricultural states in terms of production volume. Instead, its advantage lies in offering distinctive, high value products that command premium prices in domestic and global markets.
Sitharaman added that the advancement of Meghalaya’s farming sector would contribute to the broader economic development of the Northeast, helping transform the region into an important growth centre for the country.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma described the new facility as a significant step forward for the state’s organic farming ecosystem. He highlighted the growing recognition of Meghalaya’s agricultural products, including Lakadong turmeric, ginger and black pepper, which have earned a reputation for quality in national and international markets.
According to the Chief Minister, the spice processing facility will strengthen the agricultural value chain by improving processing infrastructure, expanding market access and enabling farmers to secure better returns for their produce. The project is also expected to create employment opportunities and support rural livelihoods across the region.
The initiative is seen as a boost to the Northeast’s efforts to position itself as a hub for premium organic agriculture and sustainable economic growth.
