MARGAO: Congress leader from Nuvem constituency Jose (Raju) Cabral charged the Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa for abuse of power and the misuse of state machinery, including the police, to reign in state terror against the people of Nuvem, who are opposing the MLA and exposing his hollow claims of development.
Addressing a press meet along with a group of Nuvem villagers, Cabral warned the MLA and the government that the people of Nuvem will not be cowed down by such acts of the lawlessness of the police under the influence of the local MLA.
The villagers who joined the press briefing criticized the arrest of peaceful citizens and keeping them under police custody during the night. “We only questioned the local MLA when he was speaking at a prize distribution function justifying his defection and boasting of development of the constituency”, they said.
They stated that the MLA responded by arresting and showing us the doors of the prison.
Jose (Raju) Cabral further charged that the Nuvem MLA is playing havoc with the life of political opponents by using illegal and foul means. Elaborating further, Cabral said that the licences of small business enterprises are withheld or cancelled if the bribes are not paid to the extortionists of the MLA.
“There is illegal dumping of garbage on the Loutulim plateau with the connivance of the MLA and no authority acts despite the locals filing complaints. The scheme of the government providing compensation to local vendors is selectively provided to the supporters and henchmen of the MLA,” Cabral further said.
Speaking before media, the gathered villagers said that their MLA has lost the mental balance knowing his days are numbered, gauging the solid resentment for his defection and his failure on all fronts.
Jose Cabral warned that if such dictatorial acts and harassment of the people continue, they will have to take to the streets, and the MLA will be solely responsible for any law and order situation. “People of Nuvem are peaceful and tolerant, but don’t put their patience to test”, Cabral said.
