New Delhi: For the first time, the Government of India has officially disclosed the names of six military personnel who lost their lives during Operation Sindoor, India’s military response following the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
The April 22 attack in the Baisaran Valley claimed the lives of 26 people, including 25 tourists and a local pony operator, after terrorists opened fire on visitors in one of the region’s popular destinations.
The names of the fallen soldiers will now be permanently engraved on granite plaques at the National War Memorial near India Gate in New Delhi, ensuring that their sacrifice is remembered for generations to come.
The six personnel include five members of the Indian Army and one member of the Indian Air Force. They are Subedar Major Pawan Kumar of Headquarters, 10 Infantry Brigade, Rifleman Sunil Kumar of the 4th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar of the 5 Field Regiment, Agniveer Mood Murali Nayak of the 851 Light Regiment, Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh of the 237 Field Workshop, and Sergeant Surendra Kumar of the 39 Wing of the Indian Air Force.
Rifleman Sunil Kumar was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra for gallantry, while Sergeant Surendra Kumar received the Vayu Medal for his service and sacrifice.
Launched in the early hours of May 7, 2025, Operation Sindoor targeted terrorist infrastructure across Pakistan’s Punjab province and Pakistan occupied Kashmir following the Pahalgam attack. The operation marked a major shift in India’s counter terrorism doctrine, emphasising swift, precise and calibrated action against threats.
The military operation was named Operation Sindoor as a tribute to the families of those killed in Pahalgam, particularly the widows left behind by one of the deadliest terror attacks in India in recent decades. The name symbolised both remembrance and the country’s continuing commitment to a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism.
