MARGAO: Bailancho Ekvott convenor Auda Viegas has raised concern over what she described as a rise in organised begging in Margao and other parts of Goa, urging authorities to take immediate and effective action.
Viegas said Margao, being Goa’s commercial capital, has a large number of traders and businesses, many of whom are reportedly affected by begging activities in commercial areas.
She also alleged that tourists are being harassed by beggars, which, she said, could create an uncomfortable experience for visitors to the state.
Viegas pointed out that although restrictions are in place against begging, effective enforcement has allegedly remained inadequate. She urged the concerned authorities to step up monitoring and take appropriate action against organised begging.
Calling for a coordinated approach, she said enforcement agencies and other concerned departments should work together to address the issue and ensure that traders, residents and tourists are not inconvenienced.
Viegas further appealed to the authorities to strengthen enforcement across Goa and take timely measures to prevent organised begging from becoming a larger concern in commercial and tourist areas.
