VASCO: Cortalim Congress leader Mahesh Nadar has raised concerns over the condition of the multipurpose cyclone shelter at Zuarinagar, alleging that the facility has been left without functional toilets and running water for several years.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Nadar claimed that the washroom facilities have not had a proper water supply since 2022. He said the lack of basic sanitation was creating particular difficulties for women, children and other members of the public who use the premises for various programmes.
Nadar questioned the maintenance of the facility despite the panchayat collecting charges from organisations and individuals for hosting events there. He said it was unacceptable for a venue being regularly used by the public to lack a basic facility such as running water.
He also criticised Cortalim MLA Anton Vas and questioned the BJP leadership over the alleged neglect. Nadar pointed out that government officials, ministers and BJP leaders have attended programmes at the same venue, asking how the condition of the washrooms could have gone unnoticed.
As a measure to resolve the issue, Nadar said he was prepared to take responsibility for maintaining the sanitation facilities at his own expense. He said he would do so if the panchayat and MLA provided the necessary No Objection Certificate.
The Zuarinagar facility was developed as a multipurpose structure, intended to provide shelter to residents during coastal emergencies while also serving as a community venue during normal times.
Nadar called for the district administration and Public Works Department to intervene and ensure that the water connection and sanitation infrastructure are restored without further delay.
He further warned that Congress workers and local residents could step up their protests if the authorities failed to address the issue.
