MARGAO: In a deposition given in the police station attack case, the former police inspector of the Panaji police station, Sudesh Naik, stated that Jennifer Monserrate was taken into custody to stop the situation from getting worse late that evening.
During the cross-examination of Naik on behalf of the accused Tony Rodrigues, senior attorney Surendra Dessai questioned the legality of the late-night arrest without following the proper procedures.
Jennifer had arrived at the police station with about thirty to forty people, according to Naik, and they had no choice but to arrest her.
“The police search party had gone to the Monserrates’ house but could not find them,” he said. But later that evening, Jennifer went back to the police station.
But he said that the thirty or forty individuals who had gone with Monserrate successfully made their getaway.
The case has now been postponed until December 13, when Naik will be cross-examined by the attorney for the other accused party.
In the meantime, Friday’s hearing was scheduled for the power rebate case. Four witnesses who recognized some documents had been summoned. The public prosecutor is scheduled to call one more witness in the case at the next hearing, which takes place on December 15.
