CANACONA – Residents have strongly objected to the dumping of waste, including medical waste, in the Patnem locality.
According to sources, huge dumps of Garbage, including medical waste such as thousands of used syringes and others, were seen during an inspection taken by the ward councillor Shubham Komarpant.
“The pathway at Kepemwada in Patnem ward leading to the Beachfront and traditionally used by fisherman is entirely infested with garbage dumps perhaps done over a long period of time. Seeing the type of waste, it seems the tourism structures operated in the nearby localities are the culprits. Besides, the surprise discovery is of medical waste, which includes thousands of used syringes and other material that seems to be thrown in bulks/bags in three places here over a long period”, Komarpant said.
Komarpant stated that going through the medical waste, we have identified the doctor and also brought to his notice the need to clear the dumped medical waste from the areas; said the doctor concerned accepted his folly and agreed to co-operate.
The site also resembles that efforts were made to destroy this waste by putting fire.
“Besides, being a pathway to the coast, this also leads you to the temple nearby, and it’s the responsibility of everyone to keep it clean. It would be disastrous if we were allowed to keep this through monsoons. We will take strict action also on the respective restaurants/shacks responsible for these waste dumps”, he said.
A villager alleged doctors’ medical negligence and informed they started to get some smell before they got alerted, checked and found garbage/wastage thrown in the areas, and held responsible for the restaurants operating in the areas.
