PANAJI: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Goa government, alleging that the recent incidents involving police personnel in criminal activities show that police stations have turned into “Gunda Gangs.”
Reacting to the arrest of two IRBn constables in the Poroscodem firing case, Alemao said it was shameful that those entrusted with maintaining law and order were themselves indulging in crime.
“The Goa BJP government has failed to keep policemen under control. Police stations have turned into ‘Gunda Gangs’, which is why policemen are now involved in crimes, extortion, and drugs. How can citizens distinguish between a genuine police officer and a gangster in uniform?” Alemao questioned.
He further alleged that some police officers were helping criminals escape custody and assisting robbers in looting the public. “Do such criminal-minded police officers have any right to serve in a force meant to protect people?” he asked.
Alemao also referred to the recent custodial assault on Edberg Pereira of Navelim, who is reportedly battling for his life at Goa Medical College, as an example of the “collapse of law and order” in the State.
“If this kind of police system continues, innocent people will never get justice,” he warned, calling for immediate reforms and accountability within the Goa Police.
