BALLI: With so many changes happening around us, it is natural for the police to adapt to the changes; however, it’s common to see the police turning a blind eye at the accident sites on NH66 in South Goa.
As usual, on Friday, a truck which had met with an accident at Barcem and another truck which had broken down at Balli was a potential hazard to the commuters passing by, but the Cuncolim police under whose jurisdiction these places fall were not even seen close to the site to manage the traffic as both the vehicles occupied substantially space of the already narrow road.
On Friday afternoon, a truck carrying commercial goods veered off the road at Barcem; the rear portion of the truck was on the road while the front portion had nose-dived on the portion below the road.
It was a scary moment for many commuters who were passing beside the fallen truck as the truck was dangerously positioned at a blind curve. Still, the police thought otherwise informed a local from Barcem.
This is not just a one-off incident where police didn’t think it wise to guide and monitor the traffic as literally one lane remained blocked till the truck was removed late in the day, he further informed.
“At about 7.00pm the cleaner of the truck who fortunately escaped with minor injuries in the mishap was seen managing the traffic, of course, he was more confused than the drivers of the vehicles coming from both the sides of the road, how can you expect a layman to manage heavy traffic at an accident site, asked another local.
Another local who identified himself as Janu informed that when he asked where the police had disappeared, he was told that they had just left; upon checking, two policemen were sipping tea in a hotel nearby and were in no hurry to come to the accident site, he said.
“It’s a common sight to see that the police don’t think it wise to manage the traffic at accident sites here, leaving everyone at a risk he added.
Another truck which had broken down at a sharp turn at Balli was a classic example of the lackadaisical attitude of Cuncolim police, inspite of the truck breaking down and posing a risk to vehicles coming on either side, the police didn’t think it wise to place reflectors or some sort of barricades to warn the approaching traffic.
One person who identified himself as Gaonkar said that inspite of the truck occupying many portions of the road and the Cuncolim police station being just not even half kilometre away, the police didn’t feel it fit to guide the traffic.
They need a refresher course, he informed.
