PANAJI: Governor of Kerala and Tamil Nadu Rajendra Arlekar has called for a widespread “reading movement” to revive the habit of reading among the younger generation, which he said is declining due to the growing use of mobile phones and social media.
Arlekar was speaking as the chief guest at the launch of ‘Manvedh’ and ‘Avirat’, books authored by Shyam Gaonkar, at the Institute Menezes Braganza.
The Governor said books are not merely a source of knowledge or entertainment but a powerful medium that enriches an individual’s intellectual world and helps shape society. He said regular reading of quality literature helps mature thinking, instil values and nurture a sensitive and cultured generation.
Arlekar stressed that parents and teachers have an important role in developing a love for reading among children from an early age, particularly during adolescence. He suggested establishing “Reading Temples” in every village as centres of knowledge, thought and values.
Director of the Department of Information and Publicity Abhir Hede said maintaining a reading culture has become increasingly challenging in the digital and social media era. He noted that reels, short videos and social media are influencing the reading habits of children and youth.
Hede also praised author Shyam Gaonkar for consistently producing quality literary work. He recalled that library periods in schools once played an important role in developing not only reading habits but also the ability to think, form independent opinions and express them effectively.
Journalist Sangam Bhonsule, while discussing key essays from ‘Manvedh’ and ‘Avirat’, highlighted themes including youth, relationships, communication, reading and introspection. He urged readers, particularly young people, to connect with the emotions expressed by the author and engage in self-reflection.
Bhonsule also stressed the importance of young people expressing their feelings openly and strengthening communication within their families.
Dasharath Parab, President of the Institute Menezes Braganza, also addressed the gathering.
Manjari Mayuresh Vatve compered the programme, while Omkar Govekar proposed the vote of thanks.
