PONDA: Despite traffic awareness Ponda leads in accidents. In Ponda Police jurisdiction among 22 died in past (Jan to Nov) eleven months shockingly 14 are bike riders, one pillion riders and four pedestrians beside one Car occupant was also died in Shiroda accident.
While for the year 2020 total 29 deaths were reported and in 2021 total 25 deaths were reported with most of deaths also were that of bike riders with most of accident involving car bike, truck bike and some times self accidents. The accidents were reported due to rash driving as well as faulty road designs.
While enforcing the traffic rules and awareness drive for road safety the Ponda Traffic Police booked around total 41058 cases for various traffic violations from January to November and recovered a fine of Rs 1.61 Crore.
The Ponda roads are constructed with faulty engineering . At several places there are sharp bends and while construction of highway the roads were never tried to straighten due to which accidents are growing. The GVM Circle, the Farmagudi Dhavlim road with sharp turns are accident prone. The police need to control the speeding vehicles and need more interceptors to check speed of vehicles. Besides at many places sign board are either damaged or not provided proper attention.
The no entry sign board displayed at Kundaim one way road is fallen on ground and could lead to major tragedy incase vehicle from Panjim takes this road after negotiating Kundaim Circle. Further the sign board at Circle is also damaged.
Ponda Traffic officials said When asked what are the main reasons for accident for rising accidents on roads including fatals he said rash and negligent driving is the main cause of accidents , beside faulty road engineering , not obeying traffic rules , etc are other causes .
Goa Road Safety Forum President Dilip Naik said Government need to improvise the dangerous sharp curves on Ponda Highways to prevent accidents . He suggested proper sign boards , and proper maintenance as well drivers obey traffic rules to prevent accidents.
