MARGAO: Youth leader Prabhav Naik has condemned the defacement of the historic Lohia Maidan in Margao, describing the graffiti on the monument as an act of vandalism and a serious insult to one of Goa’s most significant heritage sites.
Reacting to the graffiti, reportedly painted on the backdrop wall and stage skirting during the night of July 19, Naik demanded an immediate investigation and strict action against those responsible. He said the culprits must be identified and prosecuted to prevent similar incidents at heritage monuments.
Naik alleged that the incident reflects the administration’s failure to protect and preserve Lohia Maidan. He also stated that the vandalism has undermined the sanctity of the historic venue, which is closely associated with Goa’s freedom movement led by Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, Dr. Juliao Menezes and other freedom fighters.
He further claimed that Madganvcho Awaaz has repeatedly raised concerns over the poor maintenance of Lohia Maidan. According to him, the site has been neglected, with poorly maintained urinals, broken benches, overgrown weeds and inadequate upkeep affecting the dignity of the landmark.
Naik urged the Government to restore the defaced portions of the monument at the earliest and undertake comprehensive beautification and conservation works. He also called for the installation of CCTV cameras, enhanced security arrangements and regular maintenance to safeguard the historic site from future acts of vandalism.
