PSI Prathamesh Gawas has been transferred from the Valpoi Police Station to the Reserve Line following serious allegations of custodial assault made by the family of a young man, Mohin Shaikh.
The transfer comes after the family submitted a supplementary complaint accusing the officer and two unidentified constables of physically assaulting Mohin Shaikh during police custody and seeking criminal action against them.
According to the complaint filed by Sufiyan Mohamad Shaikh of Velus, Sattari, Mohin Shaikh was allegedly beaten during his detention between April 25 and 26. The complaint further states that another individual, Zamir Shaikh, informed the family that PSI Gawas along with two policemen had severely assaulted Mohin while he was in custody.
The family has also alleged that the incident caused severe mental distress to the youth, who later died under distressing circumstances. They claim that the alleged assault and its aftermath, which became known in the local area, contributed to the tragic outcome.
In their complaint, the family has demanded registration of an FIR against PSI Prathamesh Gawas and the two unidentified constables on charges including custodial violence and abetment.
Police authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the allegations, nor confirmed whether a formal inquiry has been initiated into the matter.
