PANAJI: With the 2027 Goa Assembly elections approaching, BJP Goa president Damu Naik has said the party will assess the winning capacity of candidates across all 40 constituencies before deciding on its nominees.
Naik said the BJP parliamentary board would take the final call on who receives the party ticket, making it clear that individual ambitions would remain secondary to the party’s decision.
“If my party thinks that Damu could be a good candidate, then I will have to contest,” Naik said when asked about his own candidature from Fatorda.
He said he remained loyal to the BJP and would abide by whatever decision the party takes. Whether asked to contest a particular seat or work elsewhere, he said he would follow the party’s direction.
Naik also stressed that his role would extend beyond any individual constituency, saying he would work across all 40 Assembly constituencies for the BJP.
His remarks underline the BJP’s focus on candidate selection as it prepares for the 2027 polls, with the party expected to assess prospective candidates on their ability to win and connect with voters.
Naik also said the number of candidates contesting a particular seat would not be the BJP’s primary concern. According to him, voters would judge the candidates based on their work and their relationship with the electorate.
He stressed the need for candidates to remain humble and maintain a strong connect with the people, while cautioning against assuming that repeated electoral victories automatically guarantee continued support.
Naik said voters were “wise” and were watching the performance of political representatives.
“The important thing is working capacity and not just being vocal on issues and doing nothing,” he said.
