CANACONA: While about 35 Matoli ingredients selling vendors have shown their interest, PWD has erected two pandals of varied sizes at two different places in Canacona at an overall cost of 13 Lakhs of rupees.
It may be recalled that the government has decided to set up Matoli Markets in each of the 12 taluka, and accordingly, PWD is reportedly given the task of erecting the required pandals, which are to be occupied by Matoli ingredients selling vendors.
According to sources, 35 such vendors, mostly local and indigenous growers, have shown their interest in selling different Matoli ingredients. People decorate the Ganesh Idol set-up during the Ganeshosthav celebration.
Works for the erection of a 90 metres long pandal outside the KTC Bus stand in Chaudi and another 75 metres long pandal at Poinguinim bazaar are presently going on in full swing.
According to reliable sources, PWD is erecting both the pandals of approximately 165 meters of length at the two locations by spending an amount of approx. Rs.13 lakhs of rupees.
Sources added that the pandal’s top will be covered with sheets instead of a plastic cover.
The 11 days Matoli bazaar will be held between 20th to 31st August all over the State, and given the expenses of 13 Lakhs of rupees in one Taluka, the overall crore of rupees expenditure will be incurred in the State.
Interestingly, with a few days to go for the Ganesh Chaturthi, many hill growers/indigenous people sell different items not only along the highway road passing through Canacona but even on internal streets, making available every ingredient required to decorate Matoli.
Karmala, Betel/areca nut, Ridge gourd, Cucumber, Ambade, Banana Flowers, Pumpkins, Lady-Fingers, Turmeric Leaves, Bhendi, Raw Bananas, Tambdo -Bhaji, Tero, besides Eatable, non-eatable, Medical/herbal fruits, leaves makes up for the over 200-400 types of Seasonal fruits, Flowers and Wild Herbs different Matoli ingredients.
A councillor stated the huge expenses are a waste of money, local vendors selling Matoli ingredients are traditionally known to sell Matoli ingredients from anywhere or spaces marked, and necessarily there was no need erect cost-effective pandals.
