QUELEOSSIM: The Quelossim Panchayat has secured a stay from the Deputy Director of Panchayats on the provisional No Objection Certificate (NOC) earlier granted by the Block Development Officer (BDO) for a proposed floating resort project in the village.
The stay order has provided temporary relief to the Panchayat and local residents, who have been opposing the project over concerns that it could adversely affect the environment, fishing activities and the traditional character of Quelossim.
Panchayat members and villagers welcomed the Deputy Director’s decision but described it as only an interim relief, stating that they would continue their efforts until the provisional NOC is permanently revoked.
They thanked the villagers for remaining united in opposing the project and expressed gratitude to Cortalim MLA Anton Vas for supporting their cause. According to Panchayat representatives, the MLA played a key role in taking up the issue with the concerned authorities and seeking intervention.
The proposed floating resort project has remained a contentious issue since 2012, with residents consistently raising concerns over its potential environmental impact and its effect on the livelihoods of the local fishing community.
The Panchayat said it would continue to pursue all legal and administrative avenues to protect the interests of the village, while villagers urged the authorities to consider their concerns before taking any final decision on the project.
Residents described the stay order as a positive step in their long-standing campaign against the floating resort proposal but maintained that their struggle would continue until the proposal is permanently dropped.
