MARGAO: A Quepem resident lost ₹2,26,123.04 after allegedly falling victim to a sophisticated online fraud in which scammers posed as representatives offering a free credit card.
According to Margao Town Police, complainant Clim Fernandes, a resident of Avedem, Padribhat, Quepem, reported that on March 28, 2026, at around 12:28 pm, he received a phone call from an unknown person offering him a free credit card.
The caller allegedly sent a WhatsApp link and persuaded Fernandes to download and install an APK file. He was then instructed to share his mobile screen and upload copies of his personal documents. Believing the offer to be genuine, the complainant followed the instructions.
Police said that after the APK file was opened, One-Time Passwords (OTPs) were generated without the complainant’s knowledge. The accused allegedly gained unauthorized access to his bank and credit card accounts and carried out multiple fraudulent transactions.
The complainant suffered a total financial loss of ₹2,26,123.04.
