Panaji: In a heart-stopping quarterfinal match of the 14th Wilred Leisure Soccer Cup 2025, Raia Sporting Club secured a thrilling semifinal spot by outlasting Velsao Sports and Cultural Club in a nail-biting penalty shootout. The match, played at the DSYA ground in Curtorim, was a testament to the teams’ resilience and skill, as they battled to a 1-1 draw in regular time before Raia emerged victorious with a 6-5 score in the tiebreaker. This victory marks a significant milestone for Raia Sporting Club in the tournament, showcasing their determination and prowess on the field.
The match began with a promising start for Raia, as Velroy Borges scored in the 8th minute, setting the tone for what would be a closely contested encounter. However, Velsao Sports and Cultural Club managed to equalize through Agnelo D’Souza in the 34th minute, ensuring the score remained tied at 1-1 by the end of regular time. The tension was palpable as the match progressed to a penalty shootout, where Raia’s Achilles Fernandes, Roy Colaco, Sanjiro Pango, Joswel Cardozo, and Jack Medeira successfully converted their penalties. Meanwhile, Velsao’s Aaron Fernandes, Melwyn Gama, Alerico Cardozo, and Domnic Soares also found the net, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win. Velroy Borges’s outstanding performance earned him the Man of the Match award, highlighting his crucial role in Raia’s victory.
