CANACONA: Minister and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar on Sunday laid the foundation stone for a new house for a widow and her two daughters at Marle in Poinguinim village under his Shramdham initiative.
The beneficiary, Chandrika Gaonkar, has been living in extremely difficult conditions after nearly 90 per cent of her mud-walled house collapsed. Undergoing chemotherapy and with no regular source of income, Chandrika was unable to rebuild a safe home for herself and her two teenage daughters.
Acting on recommendations from local residents, Tawadkar assured the family that a new house would be constructed. He personally laid the foundation before Shramdham warriors immediately commenced construction work with the aim of completing the house at the earliest.
The new house will consist of a verandah, hall, bedroom and kitchen and is being constructed on the site of the family’s previous home, located on a hilltop with no motorable access. As vehicles cannot reach the site, volunteers are manually carrying stones, bricks, sand and other construction materials from the nearest road to the construction site.
Tawadkar joined the volunteers during the construction drive and encouraged their efforts. BJP workers and volunteers from different parts of Canacona also participated in the initiative, working alongside the Shramdham team to help build the house.
Shramdham is a voluntary service initiative that encourages people to contribute “one rupee and one day of work” for the welfare of society, promoting community participation, unity and compassion through collective service.
