PANAJI: Days after the Department of Urban Development objected to the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) proposal of settlement and development of the old building of the National Theatre by the commissioner and the Mayor, Minister Vishwajit Rane on Saturday granted his green signal for the proposal.
Rane said that government would resolve all the issues concerning the national theatre.
He said that Mayor would be granted permission to go ahead with the proposal.
Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor Rohit Monserrate had said that the Corporation has decided to give 400 sq mts area to M/s Rao & Company after demolishing the National Theatre building.
The Urban Development Department, in a Communication to the CCP, had directed not to proceed ahead with the matter and any development of the National Theatre property should be carried out after consultation and approval of the state government.
“You are directed not to proceed ahead with the matter and any development of the National Theatre property should be carried out after consultation and approval of the state government,” stated the letter was written by Director of Urban Development Gurudas Pilarnekar to CCP
Former mayors Surendra Furtado and Uday Madkaikar alleged CCP is trying to sell the National Theatre, which belongs to the CCP.
Furtado also had strongly opposed the decision to give 400 sq mts to the National Theatre proprietor.
It is said that CCP had approved the mutual settlement of the National Theatre case on condition that Rao withdraws the petition, which is in court.
According to sources, the Cine National proprietor Rao & Company had submitted a proposal to the Corporation stating that they are in occupation of the land since 1933 and built a cinema/theatre in 1933 called “Eden” exhibiting films for the entertainment of the public.
