MARGAO: Former member of the State Cultural Development Committee Vishal Pai Cacode has criticised Ravindra Bhavan Margao for allegedly failing to commemorate the birth centenary of renowned Goan cartoonist and illustrator Mario Miranda.
Speaking on the concluding day of the centenary year, Pai Cacode said it was unfortunate that a globally celebrated Goan artist did not receive any formal tribute or programme at Ravindra Bhavan Margao despite repeated reminders.
He alleged that institutions established to preserve and promote Goan art and culture were gradually moving away from their original objectives, adding that such indifference towards cultural icons sends the wrong message to younger generations.
Pai Cacode further claimed there appeared to be a growing tendency to sideline local artists while giving preference to outsiders, warning that such practices could adversely affect Goa’s cultural identity and artistic ecosystem in the long run.
Expressing concern over the future functioning of cultural institutions, he also raised apprehensions about possible attempts to privatise cultural spaces in the state. He said he was seeking related documents through the Right to Information (RTI) Act and would place the details before the public once obtained.
“It is deeply unfortunate that Ravindra Bhavan Margao chose to ignore the birth centenary of Mario Miranda, an icon who brought global recognition to Goa,” Pai Cacode stated while questioning the priorities and accountability of cultural bodies.
