PANAJI: The Directorate of Transport has announced that the upgraded Mhaji Bus Scheme will be launched from August 1, and has urged private stage carriage bus operators interested in joining the initiative to complete their registration before the rollout.
According to a public notice issued by Director of Transport Arvind Khutkar, operators must submit the prescribed application form along with the necessary supporting documents to the office of the respective Assistant Director of Transport prior to the scheme’s implementation.
The department stated that information regarding the application process, eligibility requirements and document checklist can be obtained from the offices of the Assistant Directors during working hours. The forms and related details are also available on the Transport Department’s official website.
The launch follows the State government’s decision to extend the Mhaji Bus Scheme, 2025 for another year. Under a recent notification, the scheme will now remain in force until May 14, 2027, ensuring the continuation of financial assistance for private bus operators.
Designed to improve the efficiency and sustainability of Goa’s public transport system, the revised scheme introduces a package of incentives to support private stage carriage services and encourage fleet upgrades.
Among the key benefits is a fuel subsidy of ₹3 per kilometre, aimed at reducing operating expenses. Bus owners will also receive reimbursement of 50 per cent of their annual insurance premium, helping lower recurring costs while promoting insurance compliance.
To encourage the replacement of ageing vehicles, the government will provide a ₹10 lakh grant to operators who replace buses that are 15 years old or older. The measure is expected to enhance passenger safety, improve service reliability and contribute to lower vehicle emissions.
The Mhaji Bus Scheme was introduced to strengthen Goa’s public transport network by improving connectivity, especially in rural and remote areas, while supporting private operators through targeted financial incentives and infrastructure modernisation.
