PANAJI: Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) MLA Viresh Borkar said that the opposition did not have the numbers, so no candidate was fielded for the Rajya Sabha Polls.
“if we had put an independent candidate, we require 10 MLAs, and we do not have that, and similarly for a party candidate, we require 4 MLA. This is the reason we did not field a candidate,’ said Borkar.
Seven Members of the Goa Legislative Assembly from the Opposition Benches have unanimously decided not to field a Candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha MP polls.
The press communique signed by all the seven opposition MLAs – Congress(3), AAP(2), Goa Forward(1) and RG(1) stated that the decision is ‘part of Political Strategy in the interest of Goa’.
This development has ensured BJP candidate Tanavade’s unopposed election as Rajya Sabha MP.
In the 40-member Goa Assembly, the BJP has 33 seats (including the support of five MLAs), while seven are from the opposition. The BJP has 28 MLAs and the support of two MLAs of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and three Independents.
