PANAJI: In a sharp response to the approval of occupancy certificates for a controversial project in Azossim, the Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) has officially withdrawn its support to the Azossim-Mandur panchayat, citing a breach of trust and deviation from party principles.
Speaking at a press conference in Panaji on Sunday, RGP MLA Viresh Borkar expressed his displeasure over being kept in the dark about the file concerning the issuance of occupancy certificates.
“Despite ongoing communication with the panchayat regarding development activities, I was not informed about this matter. I only became aware after reading a report in a local newspaper,” Borkar said.
He added that he had previously objected to the same project and reiterated the party’s firm opposition to large-scale developments.
Following this revelation, Borkar summoned Sarpanch Prashant Naik and informed him of RGP’s decision to withdraw its backing of the panchayat.
The party’s leadership described the approval of the occupancy certificates as a unilateral decision taken without consulting the RGP or its elected representatives.
RGP President Manoj Parab reinforced the party’s stand, stating, “We cannot condone decisions taken independently by sarpanchas supported by RGP, especially when they pertain to mega projects.
The party has a clear stance against such developments.” Parab emphasized that the sarpanch should have at least consulted the local MLA before processing the file.
Although Sarpanch Prashant Naik is not a member of the RGP, he is supported by three panchayat members aligned with the party, including Deputy Sarpanch Tejaswi Naik. As of now, it remains uncertain whether a no-confidence motion will be brought against Naik by these RGP-backed panchas.
The incident has sparked political tension in the village, with residents and political observers watching closely to see if internal party pressure will lead to further action within the panchayat body.
