PANAJI: The Goa Traffic Police launched a special drive from September 14, 2022, to September 25, 2022, to instil a sense of discipline amongst the drivers and riders due to rising cases of Motor Vehicle accidents, including fatal accidents. During the special drive, the Traffic Police prosecuted a large number of motorists for various violations. Goa Traffic Police intends to continue the drive to bring order to the local roads.
Pertinently, enforcement in conjunction with proper Road Geometry and appropriate Signage is a threesome strategy to curb road accidents. While the last two are the domain of other agencies, traffic regulation and enforcement are the responsibility of the Traffic Police. Therefore, special drives go a long way in modifying the behaviour of road users as the Police have no control over the issuance of Driving licenses which is the most important first step to ensure that only well-trained persons ride or drive the vehicles.
Through the special drive, for the violation of overspeeding, total of 701 cases were booked under Motor Vehicle (M.V.) Act and fine of Rs. 7,05,000/- was collected. The punishment for violation is Rs. 1000 for LMV and Rs. 2000 for vehicles other than LMV MDL of the violator to be suspended for a minimum period of 3 months. Similarly, for a drunken driving violation, 101 cases were booked. The punishment for this violation is imprisonment which may extend to six months, and a fine which may extend to Rs. 10,000 imposed, and the MDL of the violator to be suspended for a minimum period of 3 months.
Under violation rule Riding Without Helmet, total cases booked were 2271 with an amount of Rs.22,71,000/- fine collected. The punishment for this violation is fine of Rs. 1000, and the MDL of the violator is to be suspended for a minimum period of 3 months. Similarly Driving Without Seatbelt, total of 676 cases are booked, and the amount of Rs.6,76,000/- fine collected as a fine for a violation under this rule is Rs.1,000/-
Total of 3,871 cases are booked under violation of the rule Dangerous Parking/No Parking, and the fine collected is the amount of Rs.19,44,000/-. The punishment for this violation is fine of Rs.500 for the first offence and Rs. 1500 for a second or subsequent offence.
Goa Traffic Police appeals to all road users- drivers and riders, particularly young people- to drive/ride safely and responsibly and obey all the Traffic Rules.
