PANAJI: Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho reminded RTO officials of their responsibility to restore respect for themselves and their department, and he appeared visibly displeased with them for not enforcing the Motor Vehicle regulations on the roads.
Godinho questioned the lack of RTO officers on the roads to enforce road discipline and stop traffic infractions while speaking at the introduction of eight enforcement vehicles to RTOs.
While our officials are nowhere to be seen, it appears that the police department has assumed control of the enforcement campaign. We must work hard and diligently at our jobs,” he remarked.
Godinho noted that the public’s fear of RTO officials and traffic laws has decreased as a result of their absence. People drive around doing whatever they want, disregarding the law, because of the current circumstances. RTO officials used to be a little afraid, but that is no longer the case, he sternly said, ordering them to adhere to tight rules in order to win back the trust that they and their department had lost.
Moreover, the minister insisted that strict enforcement would lower the number of traffic accidents. Enforcement is what we do. We seem to have forgotten that somehow,” he said.
