MARGAO: The deteriorating condition of the roof at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, has sparked serious safety concerns, with rusted roofing sheets and support channels posing a potential hazard to the public, especially during the ongoing monsoon season.
The roof above Gate No. 8 is reported to be in particularly poor condition, with several metal sheets visibly rusted, damaged and partially broken. Residents have expressed concern that strong winds could dislodge the ageing sheets, endangering pedestrians and motorists using the adjoining road.
Locals have questioned whether the authorities were aware of the deteriorating condition and urged immediate intervention before any untoward incident occurs.
When contacted, stadium authorities acknowledged that the stadium’s rooftop is nearly 30 years old and requires replacement.
They stated that an estimate has already been prepared and the tender process has been completed. However, the project is currently awaiting expenditure sanction from the competent authority.
Officials added that repair work on the West Stand roof has already been completed, while the remaining three stands will be taken up once the expenditure sanction is received.
With heavy rains and strong winds continuing during the monsoon, residents have urged the authorities to expedite the approval process and commence the repair work at the earliest to eliminate the safety risk.
