Mormugao: Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar on Wednesday launched the relaying of a sewer line and reconstruction of chambers at Baina, in the presence of councillor Shraddha Amonkar and other officials, marking the beginning of a key infrastructure upgrade in the area.
The project is aimed at resolving long-standing issues of overflow and blockages in the existing sewerage system, which has been under strain due to increasing population. Speaking at the site, Amonkar said the existing pipeline had outlived its utility and required urgent replacement.
“The existing sewer line is nearly 30 years old and had frequent blockages, leading to overflow in several areas. With the increase in population, the load on the system has gone up, making it necessary to upgrade the pipeline,” he said.
He informed that the earlier pipeline, which had a diameter of 150 mm, is being replaced with a wider 275 mm pipeline to improve capacity and ensure smoother flow. The project, estimated at ₹1.75 crore, is expected to provide significant relief to residents facing persistent sanitation issues.
Amonkar further stated that the initiative forms part of a broader plan to modernise sewerage infrastructure across the constituency. “We are not limiting this to Baina alone. Sewer lines are being replaced from Sada to Bogda and in other parts of Mormugao to strengthen the overall system,” he said.
Emphasising the importance of public participation, he urged residents to connect to the new sewer network. “As new lines are being laid, people should come forward to take connections and construct proper toilet facilities. This will help improve sanitation standards across the area,” he added.
The works will be carried out in phases, with authorities aiming to minimise inconvenience to residents during execution.
