VALPOI: Valpoi Police are investigating the death of a 49-year-old man from Sattari who allegedly consumed weedicide and later succumbed while undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim.
According to police, a wireless message was received from the Casualty Police Cell of GMC on June 18, 2026, informing that Maruti Mayekar, 49, a resident of Gomalwada, Velguem in Sattari, had died in Ward No. 146 of the hospital on June 17.
Following the post-mortem examination, the attending doctor, Dr. Madhivadhana (MBBS), certified the cause of death as “cerebral and pulmonary edema consequent to alleged history of ingestion of weedicide.”
However, doctors have preserved the viscera for chemical analysis to determine the presence of organophosphorus, organochlorine and paraquat poison and to ascertain the exact cause of death.
