CANACONA: In a ‘Save Tiger movement’ all the local bodies including the lone municipality in Canacona are urged to pass a resolution to declare Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary as Tiger Reserve.
Infact, Rajan Ghate alongwith Janardhan Bhandari, Vikas Bhagat and several others as “Jagrut Canconkars” submitted memorandums to all Village Panchayats and Canacona Municipal Council in Canacona Taluka demanding their support to declare Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary as Tiger Reserve.
The crusaders to protect and ‘Save-Tiger’, urged the respective local bodies to pass a resolution during the Gramshaba./Panchyat Meeting(Members Body) and Council meeting on River Mhadei to Notify Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary as Tiger Reserve.
Stating ‘This is very important issue for our Village and Goa’, Team Members for Save Madhei Save Goa Tiger Reserve further said, ‘’.Our village will be affected if the water of Mhadei River is diverted to Karnataka not only for want of water but the impact of the double tracking and Coal movement will have adverse on South Goa’.
The Mahadei provides the maximum quantity of drinking water to Goa and sustains the natural flora and fauna. It runs through and sustains three wildlife sanctuaries and one national park – the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park, Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary, Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, and Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.
If the natural flow is disturbed it will have a disastrous effect on our entire ecosystems. The salinity of river Mandovi will increase and will adversely affect the marine life.
The various fish species will either migrate or succumb. The salinity will further percolate through our soil and our cultivable fertile land with its rich biodiversity will eventually turn into a desolate land.
It is therefore, require to unanimously resolve to urge the Government of Goa and the Central Government to save Mhadei and protect its flow from diversion to other basins in the interest of maintaining and avoiding the destructions of ecosystems in Goa and displacement of its inhabitants.
‘Please unanimously resolve to demand the Goa Government to urgently notify Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary as Tiger Reserve.
The team further urged to unanimously resolve to demand the withdrawal of the go ahead permission given by the Central Government to the Karnataka’s Detail Project Report (DPR) for their Kalasa Bhandura Project on River Mhadei and its water diversion to other basis to the State of Karnataka.
