SANKHALIM: While the State government is reeling under the debts of over Rs 26000 cr and has been borrowing almost every month, the Dr Pramod Sawant government is busy splurging on the renovation of temples.
Yes sounds strange but true; hundreds of farmers are awaiting compensation from the government for crop destruction due to cyclones and heavy rains.
In fact, the recent flash floods in Sattari has damaged several houses, but the government is yet to provide adequate compensation to them.
But while all this can wait, as Dr Pramod Sawant priorities are renovation and illumination of temples.
This could be due to teh forthcoming elections, and in a bid to please teh Hindu community, teh CM is undertaking the works on priority.
On Tuesday, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Illumination of Radhakrishna Mandir at Sankhali.
Guess what? A total of ₹4.5 Cr of expenditure has been incurred for this development.
“Sankhali shall continue to develop with better connectivity and modern facilities which can make it the preferred hinterland tourism destination in Goa,” CM tweeted.
Well this is not the only case. The State government is set to renovate the Shree Mahalsa temple at Verna at an estimated cost of Rs 100 cr.
On Wednesday, teh CM and teh Dy CM Babu Kavlekar inaugurated the Development Plan of the site of Shree Mahalsa Devi Temple, at Verna Phase II.
Madkai MLA Ramkrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar asked the state government why it could not reconstruct the houses damaged in the recent flood when it is willing to spend Rs 100 crore on proposed projects the Shree Mahalasa Temple at Verna.
Although Mahalasa is his ‘kuladevi’ (family goddess), Dhavalikar suggested that the government reconstruct the houses on priority.
He said that he shouldn’t be misunderstood as opposing the work of the Mahalsa temple but that the first priority should be reconstructing the houses of the real bhumiputras who lost their shelter in the floods.
Dhavalikar said that the amount announced by the government for the reconstruction of their houses is very little and said that each house needs at least Rs 4 lakh. He asked the people to save the money if the government paid them and assured reconstructing their houses once the new government was formed.
