Panaji: The Supreme Court is expected to hear on Tuesday a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by Congress leader Girish Chodankar challenging the Bombay High Court’s decision to uphold the Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker’s ruling.
The Speaker had dismissed Codankar’s plea seeking the disqualification of eight Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) who defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Chodankar’s petition argues against the Speaker’s order, contending that the eight MLAs, by joining the BJP, violated the anti-defection provisions and should therefore be disqualified. However, the High Court had previously rejected this challenge, affirming the Speaker’s authority and decision.
The upcoming hearing in the Supreme Court is being closely watched, as it could have significant implications for party defections and political stability in Goa.
