MARGAO: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced here on Friday that a new department dedicated solely to the welfare of people with disabilities would be established. This department would strive to improve the lives of people with disabilities (PwD) by giving them access to all necessary facilities.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is being celebrated at Margao at the same time that CM Sawant announced the establishment of a special department for people with disabilities.
He also disclosed that the same is expected to start operating on April 1, 2024, which is the start of the following fiscal year.
The Gujarati Samaj Educational Trust special school in Margao, the office of the State Commissioner for PwD, and the Director of the Social Welfare Department collaborated to organize the program.
Speaking to the group, CM announced the establishment of a permanent hospital with the goal of offering medical attention and assistance to people with disabilities.
“The opening of a permanent hospital is a sign of a sustained effort to address the inequities in healthcare that affect people with disabilities. According to Sawant, this program shows a dedication to guaranteeing that people with disabilities have access to specialized medical care that can improve their general well-being.
PwD matters are currently under the Social Welfare Department’s jurisdiction. When this new department is formally established, it will be interesting to see who becomes the minister and whether it can provide the necessary services.
