New Delhi: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s address at the United Nations General Assembly drew attention after an Indian diplomat was seen appearing to chuckle and shake his head while Sharif spoke about Pakistan’s version of the 2025 military confrontation with India.
During his speech, Sharif praised Pakistan’s armed forces for their response to India’s Operation Sindoor, claiming that the military had “silenced the enemy” and “taught it a lesson” during the conflict.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. India said the operation targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Sharif described Pakistan’s military response as precise and professional while presenting Islamabad’s account of the confrontation. The remarks were followed by the visible reaction of Indian diplomat R Srinivas, who appeared to chuckle and shake his head as the Pakistani leader continued.
Sharif also thanked US President Donald Trump for what he called his “timely intervention” during the conflict. He said Trump’s involvement came at a critical moment when India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed countries, were facing the possibility of a wider confrontation.
The Pakistani prime minister described Trump’s role as “resolute and visionary leadership” and said his intervention helped prevent further escalation.
Trump has repeatedly taken credit for helping bring the hostilities to an end. India has maintained that the cessation of military action was reached directly between India and Pakistan rather than through third-party mediation.
Sharif also issued a warning over the Indus river system, saying any attempt to stop, impede or divert Pakistan’s share of the waters would be considered an “act of war.” India has placed the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance following the Pahalgam attack and has linked its position to concerns over cross-border terrorism.
