New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has strongly defended India’s economic performance, hitting back at critics who have questioned the country’s growth trajectory amid global economic uncertainty.
Addressing the UP International Trade Show 2026, Shah pointed to India’s recent economic performance and developments in the country’s manufacturing sector. He said India had not only maintained its growth momentum but had accelerated despite global turmoil and several economic challenges.
Shah highlighted India’s 7.8% growth rate in the latest quarter and referred to an upward revision in the country’s growth outlook by Moody’s. He said such indicators demonstrated the resilience of the Indian economy and rejected criticism suggesting that the country’s economy was struggling.
Responding to those who have described India’s economy as “dead”, Shah said people with a negative mindset could not recognise the changes taking place around them. He also highlighted the government’s efforts to expand India’s international trade through Free Trade Agreements with several countries.
According to Shah, these agreements are expected to provide Indian industries with greater access to international markets while strengthening the country’s export potential.
He also focused on the growing defence manufacturing sector, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. Shah said investments were reaching all six nodes of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, covering Jhansi, Chitrakoot, Lucknow, Agra, Aligarh and Kanpur.
The Home Minister cited the manufacturing of BrahMos missiles in Uttar Pradesh and AK 203 assault rifles in Amethi as examples of the state’s expanding contribution to India’s defence production capabilities.
Shah reiterated the government’s ambition of making India the world’s leading economy by August 15, 2047, the centenary of the country’s Independence. He said India would continue its growth journey despite global uncertainty and emerging challenges.
