All cooperative banks & credit organizations will be computerized in a year: Shirodkar

PANAJI: Co-operation Minister Subhash Shirodkar on Wednesday assured the Assembly that he would order for an inquiry into the alleged Goa Dairy scam wherein milk is bought from the neighboring States at higher rates.
He responded when asked about requests for funds for the Co-operation department for the current fiscal year, “I’ll look into it.”
Regarding multi-State cooperative banks, Shirodkar stated, “Personally, I oppose the State’s approval of multi-State cooperative banks. We’ll examine the limitations that can be placed on them, he continued.
The Minister noted that credit societies hold more than Rs 12,000 crore in public funds and stated that the government is working to ensure that annual audits of the societies are conducted.
He informed the House that 40 board members had been disqualified for the first time and that six societies had been subject to action.
He stated, “They cannot run for office any longer,” and added that officials of dairy societies had also been targeted for action. Shirodkar stated that the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department will now receive ownership of the feed plant.
The Minister asserted that, with the exception of one bank, none of the cooperative banks had NPAs over the previous 1.5 years. He promised that all cooperative banks and credit organizations will be computerized in a year.
Shirodkar added that 94 institutes now have administrators in place. Six of them have been disbanded, and an investigation has been started, he continued. The House later approved the funding requests after rejecting the opposition’s cut motions.
