PANAJI: In a decisive move against corruption in the public health sector, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Saturday announced that two health officers and four sanitary inspectors will be suspended next week for their alleged involvement in corruption and blackmail.
Rane said the action follows a meeting with the Directorate of Health Services (DHS), where it was found that the six officials had engaged in unethical practices, including blackmailing individuals.
“The suspension process has already been initiated, and their names will be made public next week,” he added, emphasizing the government’s commitment to accountability and transparency in health administration.
The announcement comes at a time when Goa is grappling with heavy rainfall, which has significantly increased the risk of mosquito infestation and the potential spread of vector-borne diseases such as dengue.
The health department has urged the public to take preventive measures, including eliminating stagnant water from their surroundings, using mosquito repellents, wearing full-sleeved clothing, and sleeping under mosquito nets.
Citizens are also encouraged to support local fogging operations, maintain hydration, and seek early medical consultation if symptoms such as fever, headache, or body pain occur.
In case of a medical emergency, people can contact the 108 emergency response service.
In a separate development, Rane also announced that Vagheri Hills in Keri will be included in a wildlife sanctuary.
He described the area as ecologically sensitive and said the move is essential to protect Goa’s rich biodiversity. “It is the need of the hour that such ecologically sensitive areas are protected.
This move is in the public interest and in the interest of the state,” Rane stated.
