MAPUSA: A girl from Ansabhat, Mapusa was the target of a complaint after she offended the Hindu community by making comments on social media about Devi Lairai’s customs and culture. Massive crowds of dhonds and devotees gathered at the Mapusa Police station on Tuesday night, demanding that the individual be brought before the community right away to apologize.
After a rude social media comment was made about Devi Lairai customs and culture, specifically the “Homkhand” ritual, tensions within the Hindu community erupted. A massive bonfire known as Homkhand is built in front of the temple.
On this day, male devotees who become Dhond begin the tradition of abstaining from meat consumption and fasting that was started a month ago. They bathe in sacred locations before eating.
They perform a ‘agnidivya’ ritual on the day of Jatra, which involves bathing in a designated lake and walking over hot coals. When a user criticized this ritual, claiming that it harms the environment, the Hindu community took offense.
The comment, which says, “I don’t know how you can call it a culture or a tradition and praise anybody while you cause harm to the environment in such a manner,” was posted by the user on social media on her Instagram story.
Even though I’m not the best at protecting the environment, at least I don’t do as much damage as I could. Cultures and traditions can be carried forward with mindfulness and respect if one is mindful in their actions and takes a stand.
