ANJUNA: The Sonali Phogat murder mystery got another twist as IGP Omvir Singh Bishnoi today said the accused mixed some obnoxious substance in drinking water and forced Sonali Phogat to drink it.
“It was seen that one suspect gave her some substance forcefully. She was given some obnoxious chemical, and after that, she was not in control,” said Bishnoi.
He further said that during the course of the investigation, the accused Sudhir Sangwan and Sukhwinder Singh were summoned by Anjuna Police Station Staff and thoroughly questioned.
“Consequent to painstaking questioning and circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased, Sangwan has confessed to the crime, stating that after reaching Goa, he along with Sukhwinder took Sonali Phogat to a restaurant on the pretext of partying, and there Sangwan mixed some obnoxious substance in drinking water and forced Sonali to drink it,” he added.
IGP informed that after drinking the water, she felt uneasy and sick in the restaurant. Sangwan and Sukwinder later took her to the hotel, Grand Leonny, where they were staying and then to St Antony’s hospital, Anjuna where she was declared brought dead.
CCTV recordings of relevant premises were examined by the Investigating Officer, and it was found that Sudhir was forcefully making Sonali drink the alleged liquid in a water bottle.
“Since Post Mortem report has not mentioned the exact cause of death and would be available only after Chemical Examination of Viscera, Histopathological and serological reports which would take a while, to avoid the possibility of destruction of evidence and influencing the witnesses,” he said.
The police said that both Sukwinder and Sangwan had been arrested, and further investigation is in progress.
