VELSAO: After several days of inconvenience and safety concerns, the South Western Railways (SWR) has finally completed work on the uneven road near the Velsao railway gate crossing, much to the relief of the locals. The road, which had been left bumpy and uneven due to previous railway construction work, had become a source of numerous minor accidents and significant challenges for traditional fishermen transporting their fresh catch.
Local fishermen had long complained that the road’s condition caused fish baskets to topple off their vehicles, resulting in financial losses and disruptions. “The uneven surface made it extremely difficult to navigate, especially with the weight of our baskets. Many of us faced accidents and constant delays,” one fisherman shared.
The issue caught the attention of social worker Roquezinho D’Souza, who raised the matter with Cortalim MLA Anton Vas and Railway Officer Meeraj Gaffar from Sanvordem. Highlighting the struggles of fishermen, senior citizens, and other residents, D’Souza stressed the urgency of addressing the problem.
“The tiles on the road were removed during the earlier railway work but were not reinstalled. This left the road bumpy and hazardous, especially for the elderly, disabled individuals, and two-wheeler riders,” D’Souza had explained. “There were reports of minor accidents, and residents were losing patience over the delay.”
SWR authorities promptly responded to the complaints and began repair work on November 5. Officers inspected the site and assured locals that the project would be expedited. D’Souza confirmed that a railway official was deputed to oversee the repairs to ensure quality and timely completion.
On Friday, the SWR officially completed the roadwork, restoring a smooth and level surface. Residents expressed their relief and gratitude for the timely intervention. “This will make a significant difference for our daily commute and for the fishermen who depend on this route to transport their catch,” one local remarked.
The completion of this pending work marks a victory for community advocacy and collaboration between locals and railway authorities.
