CANACONA: Asking to cultivate scientific temperament and tap innovative ideas among children, Dr Nitin Sawant, assistant professor in the Department of Zoology at Goa University, called for cultivating a scientific approach among children with the need for environmental conservation.
Speaking as a Chief Guest at a two-day science festival to mark the National Science Day celebrated at S S Angle Higher Secondary School, Mashem-Canacona on February 25 and 26 Dr Sawant further said all development works in harmony with nature should be encouraged.
Various inter-school competitions, including the science project competition, a science quiz competition and a stone painting competition, besides street play and group singing competitions, were held on the occasion.
A total of 19 High schools from Canacona Taluka participated in the event.
Dr Santosh Vernekar spoke on ‘Personal Healthcare’ and the need for a scientific attitude in dealing with health care matters.
The theme of the National Science Day (NSD) 2022 was ‘Integrated Approach in S&T for Sustainable Future’. February 28 is observed as the National Science Day to mark the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect by Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman on February 28, 1928, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
The National Council backed the programme for Science and Technology, the Government of India and the Goa State Council for Science and Technology,
Shri Nirakar Education Society Chairman Prashant Naik presided over the function.
In his address, Naik stressed the need for a more proactive role to be played by students. He observed that students need to be more vibrant and energetic on many issues in the State, particularly in terms of environmental conservation.
Principal of S S Angle Higher Secondary School Hemant Kamat, delivered the welcome address, while the Science Day Co-ordinator Chandralekha Mestri presented a report of the two-day events along with a video presentation. Vassallo Carvalho proposed the vote of thanks.
