PANAJI: The Goa government has directed district administrations to begin a detailed inspection and verification process to identify unsafe, abandoned, and structurally vulnerable buildings across the State.
Through a circular issued on June 24, 2025, the government instructed both District Collectors and Chairpersons of the District Disaster Management Authorities to prepare a comprehensive assessment of structures that may pose risks to residents or the public.
The directive asks authorities to coordinate with Municipal Councils and village panchayats for compiling and updating records of buildings considered unsafe within their respective areas.
Local bodies have been instructed to arrange technical inspections of such properties through qualified personnel and take necessary follow-up measures based on the findings.
The government has also asked civic authorities to serve notices on owners and occupants of dangerous structures and implement safety precautions wherever needed. These measures may include restricting entry, erecting barricades, evacuating residents, or demolishing severely damaged buildings.
Officials have been warned that delays in action could invite intervention from the district administration. The circular states that Collectors may exercise powers available under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, if local authorities fail to respond within a reasonable time.
The move is aimed at reducing risks to public safety, especially during adverse weather conditions and emergencies where weak or neglected structures could become hazardous.
