New Delhi: Six police personnel, including a sub-inspector, have been suspended after gelatin sticks were discovered near the route of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Bengaluru earlier this month.
The suspensions were ordered over alleged dereliction of duty following the recovery of explosive materials near the Prime Minister’s convoy route on May 10. The action was taken pending completion of an inquiry into the incident, which has raised concerns over security preparedness during the high-profile visit.
The suspended officers include a sub-inspector, an assistant sub-inspector, and four constables. Officials stated that the personnel will remain off duty until the investigation is completed.
Authorities have launched a detailed probe to determine how the explosive materials were found near the Prime Minister’s route and whether there was any deliberate attempt to compromise security arrangements.
Explosives Found During Routine Security Sanitisation
The security scare unfolded in the Kaggalipura area near Thathaguni, around three kilometres from the venue where Prime Minister Modi was scheduled to attend an event at the Art of Living Centre on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
The gelatin sticks were reportedly detected during routine sanitisation and inspection exercises conducted ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival.
During the checks, a police constable noticed gelatin sticks fitted with a circuit and timer, immediately triggering a major security alert.
Following the discovery, multiple security agencies intensified surveillance and launched investigations into the origin and purpose of the explosives.
National Agencies Join Investigation
The incident prompted central agencies to step in, with the National Investigation Agency joining the probe to examine possible security threats and identify those responsible.
Investigators are currently examining whether the explosives were intentionally planted or abandoned accidentally. Security arrangements related to the Prime Minister’s visit are also under review as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Prime Minister Modi had visited Bengaluru on May 10 to participate in programmes, including an event at the Art of Living Centre.
