Mapusa: Suyog Shigmotsav Mandal has secured the prestigious title of “Romtamel Champions 2026” after an exceptional run in this year’s Shigmotsav competitions, marking one of its most successful seasons to date.
The mandal participated in a record 18 Romtamel competitions across Goa, the highest by any group this year. In several instances, the team competed in two events on the same day, maintaining a consistently high standard of performance.
The group clinched First prizes at Cortalim, Calangute, Curchorem, Mapusa, Sankhali, Porvorim, Cuncolim, Pernem and Ponda. It secured Second prizes at Panaji, Margao, Bicholim, Vasco, Mandrem and Sanguem, along with a Third place at Dharbandora and Fourth places at Shiroda and Valpoi. Overall, the mandal’s tally stands at 9 First, 6 Second, 1 Third and 2 Fourth prizes.
This victory adds to the mandal’s strong legacy, having won the championship title seven times over the past 11 years, including in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
A key highlight of its performances has been the annual presentation of “Shigmyachi Jat,” known for its unique and visually striking elements that continue to draw large audiences. The concept has also influenced other mandals, many of which have begun incorporating similar creative aspects into their acts.
Despite challenges this year, including concerns over repetition of judges across competitions even after more than 50 names were suggested by the Tourism Department, the mandal managed to overcome hurdles and deliver consistent results.
The success has been attributed to the guidance of the mandal’s master, Vignesh Govind Naik, whose leadership played a crucial role in the achievement. The mandal has dedicated its victory to its late members, Brahmanand Naik and Saish Adpaikar.
Mandal members credited teamwork, discipline and sustained effort for the milestone, extending congratulations to all artists, committee members and supporters involved in the journey.
